Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

In January 2006, a collaborative agreement framework was signed between MIT, CREF/Cyprus Institute and the RPF in Cyprus, which provides for the mechanisms and the funds for the development of the EEWRC.The Cyprus Institute Program for Energy, Environment, and Water Resources (CEEW) is a new research and education program established at MIT through its partnership with The Cyprus Institute (CyI). The CEEW program encompasses both technical and policy research, concentrating on issues of relevance to Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean region.

Through joint faculty appointments, cross-registration of students, joint research projects, and graduate and postdoctoral fellows programs at the laboratory for Energy and the Environment (LFEE), the CEEW program will build collaborative research and educational opportunities with the EEWRC.Research Promotion Foundation (RPF)
In January 2006, a collaborative agreement framework was signed between MIT, CREF/Cyprus Institute and the RPF in Cyprus which provides for the mechanisms and the funds for the development of the EEWRC.Founded in 1996, the RPF was established at the initiative of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, to promote the development of scientific and technological research in Cyprus due to the fundamental importance of research in contemporary societies.The Foundation is an independent organisation governed by a twelve-member Board of Directors, appointed by the Council of Ministers for a five-year period.


 
Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (MPIC)

In January 2008 The Cyprus Institute and MPIC in Mainz, Germany, entered into a partnership in the area of atmospheric chemistry and climate research. Since January 2008, an active cooperation has been established with EEWRC.The mission of the MPIC is to perform basic research and explore the Earth and its environment on a wide range of scales, from ecosystems to the solar system, and from nanoparticles to supernovae. The MPIC conducts field studies of natural phenomena as well as laboratory analyses and experiments under controlled conditions, while Earth system interactions and feedback mechanisms are studied through computer modeling.The cooperative work with The Cyprus Institute aims to extend the basic research efforts and develop applications with a focus on the Mediterranean region. It is expected that this will contribute to the knowledge and methods needed for the sustainable use of natural resources and environmental protection.

The partnership with MPIC includes the dual tutoring of PhD students by The Cyprus Institute and the International Max Planck Research School of Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics at MPIC  and involves an exchange program for young scientists. One first initiative has been the joint autumn school on Climate Change: Causes and Impacts, organized in October 2008 in Paphos. The research focus is on the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East “hotspots” of atmospheric photochemistry, aerosol pollution and climate change. These hotspots have been identified in the analyses of satellite observations as well as projections of climate change for the 21st century. The objective is to understand the links between air pollution and climate and develop the capability to develop regional projections for the coming decades and beyond. It is anticipated that Cyprus, at the crossroads of three continents, will act as a “gateway” of scientific exchanges between Europe and the Orient.

 

Ministry of Health

The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Cyprus and The Cyprus Institute signed in November 2009, a Memorandum of Understanding concerning research collaboration in the areas of environment and health in general and in particular the cooperative research  between the State General Laboratory of the Ministry of Health and the Energy, Environment and Water Research Center (EEWRC) of The Cyprus Institute.Collaborative research projects will explore consequences of climate change and related water scarcity on heat related health hazards, the spread of vector-borne diseases, water quality and the transmittal of infectious illnesses.

 

University of Toronto

A letter of Intent for collaboration with the University of Toronto, Canada was signed in 2009. Under this three-year agreement, the two institutions will pursue joint research activities, exchange of faculty and research scholars and involvement of faculty members in thematic research projects and project funding opportunities from funding agencies in both Canada and Cyprus, but also in the EU and elsewhere, joint undertakings in graduate student supervision, short-term academic programs, joint graduate educational activities such as summer schools and Doctoral seminars and joint conferences and workshops.

 

Hellenic Center for Marine Research

An MoU was signed with the Hellenic Center for Marine Research (HCMR), Greece. Under this Memorandum of Understanding, HCMR and CyI will establish a framework of collaborative research projects.
