Sorin Hermon studied BA at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev between 1991 - 1993, in the Department of Bible and Ancient Near Eastern Studies, with majors in Prehistory and Classical Archaeology and minors in Cultural Anthropology, Art History and History of the Bible. During his studies he received a full university scholarship and was employed as research assistant in Prehistory (field supervisor in department’s excavations and laboratory research). In 2006 he graduated (MA) in Prehistory from the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. His MA thesis focused on statistical methods for prehistoric surveys and analysis of Upper Paleolithic lithic assemblages. Between 1997 – 2002 Sorin studied towards a PhD in Archaeology at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, where he taught courses in Prehistory, Human Evolution, Research Methodology and Computer Applications to Archaeology (mandatory and elusive courses at BA and MA levels). His studies were fully covered by a University scholarship. In 1998 and 1999 he was awarded a “Training and Mobility” scholarship, within the EC funded project ICARUS, in order to perform research on supercomputing applications in archaeology, at CINECA, Italy. Following his PHD graduation in 2002, Sorin Hermon was offered a post-doctorate in scientific visualization for cultural heritage at PIN, University of Florence, where he became Senior Researcher. In 2008 he was offered a position at The Cyprus Institute, where he currently is Assistant Professor in Digital Cultural Heritage, responsible for academic and research activities in the field of digital cultural heritage.

Sorin Hermon is leading several EC funded research activities focusing on 3D scientific visualization for research and communication of Cultural Heritage, ontology and semantic data representation and virtual museums. He is co-organizer of numerous training activities and summer schools, workshops and several scientific events. He participates in several archaeological field works, in particular Ein Zippori (Israel) Hala Sultan Tekke (Cyprus) and PASYDY (Cyprus).

 

Research Interests

His research interests are computer applications to archaeology, in particular ontologies, 3D scientific visualization, semantic structures and archaeological digital documentation. He is a member of CAA, EAA, IIPP, VAST, IPP, VSMM, and a member of the scientific committee of VSMM, VAST and CAA conferences. Sorin Hermon published two books, he is co-editor of several books and peer-reviewed conference proceedings, and author of more than thirty scientific publications.
