Cypriot students will construct MIT’s underwater robot

Date:
4 Apr 2009 - 03:00 - 5 Apr 2009 - 03:00

Outreach Activity:  Sea Perch Program

Organisers:             The Cyprus Institute, Ministry of Education and Culture and MIT

Location:                 Ayia Fyla High School, Limassol

The Cyprus Institute in collaboration with the Ministry of Education of Cyprus and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA (MIT), are organizing a hands-on educational training activity for teachers and school children in Cyprus on how to construct an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) called the “Sea Perch”.  The event is scheduled to take place over two weekends. On the first weekend 28 - 29 March 2009, Cyprus Institute staff will train local teachers on how to build the Sea Perch. The following weekend 4 - 5 April 2009, the trained teachers will instruct over 50 school children on how to construct their own.

The hands-on approach will entice school children in science and technology. In two-days the children will learn how to assemble their ROVs from kits consisting of such everyday items as PVC pipe and electrical tape. When the students are finished, they will take the electrically powered vehicles to portable pools, where they'll maneuver them by remote control.

The Sea Perch was developed in 2003 by researchers at the MIT Sea Grant program, the program will introduce students to the wonders of underwater robotics and to generate an interest and enthusiasm for continued science, technology and engineering studies.
