Speaker(s):
Prof. Gershon Grossman, Sherman-Gilbert Chair in Energy, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Technion - Israel Institute of Technology
Venue:
The Cyprus Institute, Guy Ourisson Building, Athalassa Campus (Higher Technical Institute grounds)
Abstract

This lecture is concerned with the utilization of solar energy – a renewable and abundant energy resource. The total incident solar radiation on earth in one day amounts to about 30 times the World's energy consumption in a full year. With suitable technology, it can supply most of the world's energy needs while protecting our environment.

The Solar Energy Laboratory of the Technion was first established at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in the wake of the energy crisis of 1973. The goal has been to develop technologies for the utilization of the sun’s energy – to provide “green”, pollution free and environmentally friendly energy as a viable alternative to oil. The lecture will survey the research conducted at the laboratory of the Israel Institute of Technology and elsewhere, and give an overview of solar energy utilization technology. Topics will include solar thermal conversion, solar collectors, heat storage, low, intermediate and high temperature applications and photovoltaic conversion.
