CyI Colloquium: Climate Change, Climate Policy and the Financial Crisis
Host: Prof. Klaus Schilling, CaSToRC, the Cyprus Institute
Abstract
After many years of continuous efforts, climate scientists have finally succeeded in convincing the public, stakeholders and policy-makers, that climate change is real and presents a major threat for the future existence of human civilization. Climate scientists now face the novel challenge of cooperating with economists, social-scientists and other disciplines in analyzing the available instruments for effective climate change mitigation and adaptation policies. This task has recently obtained a new dimension through the global financial crisis and recession, which was not predicted by main-stream economists and has cast serious doubts on the economic models that have been used in the past to analyze climate policies. A review is given of climate change prediction scenarios, models that have been used in the past to assess climate policies, and a proposed new generation of agent-based, system-dynamic climate-policy assessment models that can overcome the shortcomings of earlier models.
