Signing Ceremony & Lecture marking the Collaboration with the Costas & Rita Severis Foundation
The Signing Ceremony for the Collaboration Agreement between the Costas and Rita Severis Foundation and The Cyprus Institute will take place on Tuesday, 16 March 2010. On the occasion of this collaboration a lecture will be held entitled 'Visual Memories and Cultural Encounters in Cyprus: Art from the Costas and Rita Severis Collections', by Dr. Nikolas Bakirtzis, Marie Curie Fellow and Researcher at the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center of The Cyprus Institute.
Lecture
From the end of the 17th through to the 20th century, a series of European artists visited Cyprus portraying its monuments, landscapes and cultures. They produced an array of paintings, prints, posters, and memorabilia that shaped impressions and opinions about Cypriot history and culture in Europe. Furthermore, their work offers an invaluable historical record and reflects the ways outsiders interacted with, ignored, or contended with the environments and people they encountered. These visual memories are preserved in the Costas and Rita Severis Collections and present an excellent resource for study and research, an opportunity that The Cyprus Institute will pursue in the context of its institutional collaboration with the Costas and Rita Severis Foundation. This talk will highlight aspects of the foundation’s art collection and its research possibilities.
