Hanson awarded Fulbright Scholarship for research at The Cyprus Institute
Woody Hanson from the University of Minnesota was awarded a 2010-2011 Fulbright Award to pursue research in Nicosia hosted by the Cyprus Institute/ STARC. The prestigious scholarship will support him during his 10-month stay in Cyprus where he will work on his research project “Building a Bi-communal Bridge: The Nicosia Master Plan as a Conflict Resolution Case Study,” under the supervision of Nikolas Bakirtzis.
Hanson was a STARC summer research intern during July of 2009 supported by two UMN fellowships to research the urban and social realities of the divided city and the ways the Nicosia Master Plan can foster the resolution of the Cyprus problem; in particular the reunification and rehabilitation of the divided historic core of Nicosia. This preliminary fieldwork experience was critical to the preparation and the successful submission of his Fulbright application that will allow him to return to Cyprus with a notable academic distinction that recognizes CyI as an appropriate institution for research in the fields of architectural history/ urban history and planning.
Fulbright Scholarships supporting research projects abroad are particularly competitive for U.S. undergraduate students as they require methodical preparation, inspiring research ideas and promising study plans. Applications undergo a three stage selection process and have been steadily rising in numbers over the past five years. In 2009, 2209 students made it to the U.S. national level being considered for Full Scholarships to pursue research abroad. The great majority of these applications proposed research in Europe. From the 403 awards given only 49% were awarded to undergraduates like Woody. The field of Art/ Architectural History comprises only 5% of Grantees field of study.
