Sea Perch Project

The Sea Perch is an MIT project, focused on building and utilizing underwater vehicles, it introduces basic engineering concepts and the purpose of the project is to encourage children to gain an interest in the fields of science, technology and engineering.
The outreach activity took place in Nicosia in September 2008, and in Limassol in April 2009. More than 150 school children from across the island, participated in the construction of MIT’s ‘Sea Perch’ underwater robot. The hands-on educational activity was organized by the Cyprus Institute in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Culture in Cyprus and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA.
The children learned how to assemble underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROV) from kits consisting of everyday items such as PVC pipes and electrical tape. When the children finished they took their electrically powered vehicles to portable pools, where they maneuvered them by remote control.
Cyprus is the first country in Europe to participate in MIT’s Sea Perch programme, which was developed in 2003 by researchers at the Center for Ocean Engineering at MIT and it aims to introduce students to the wonders of underwater robotics and to generate an interest and enthusiasm for continued science, technology and engineering studies.
