The first STACHEM regional workshop on infrastructures for underwater archaeology took place on the 1st of December 2009 in Athens, at the Hellenic Center for Marine Research (HCMR). Dr Dimitris Sakellariou of the HCMR kindly provided support in co-organising this event.

The primary objective of this first STACHEM regional workshop dedicated to Underwater Archaeology was to bring together leaders in underwater archaeology from different countries in the Eastern Mediterranean, in a first step towards an enhanced networking between the existing infrastructures in the region. The workshop consisted of introductions to the STACHEM project and a series of presentations by various experts, highlighting current issues in underwater archaeology, grouped into 3 sessions (Session A: Infrastructures for management and protection of underwater antiquities: Requirements, limitations, perspectives. Session B: Governmental and non-governmental infrastructures for education and research in underwater archaeology: New perspectives for collaborations and joint projects. Session C: Infrastructures supporting science and technology applications to underwater archaeology: Advances, problems and potential). Special attention was paid to existing activities and infrastructures. Discussion focused on areas that could benefit the most from increased collaboration. These included for example issues of education, including both field schools and classroom learning, as well as in-situ preservation.
