The second STACHEM regional workshop relating to underwater archaeology took place in February 2010 in Israel. The first part of the workshop was hosted by the Leon Recanati Institute for Maritime Studies, at the University of Haifa, with a second part hosted by the Marine Archaeology Unit of the Israel Antiquities Authorities on February 25th in Akko. Support from the local host organisations (RIMS and IAA) is gratefully acknowledged.
The objective of the 2nd workshop relating to underwater archaeology was to build on the issues discussed at the 1st STACHEM regional workshop on infrastructures for underwater archaeology, and to continue working towards the goal of fostering an exchange of ideas, interaction, and coordination of plans. The workshop consisted of introductions to the STACHEM project, and a series of presentations by various experts, highlighting additional issues in underwater archaeology, grouped into three sessions (Session A: Monitoring coastal changes. Session B: Laboratory and in-situ conservation of underwater cultural heritage: Advances, problems and potential. Session C: Shallow water mapping and excavation). Detailed discussion followed the presentations. In the roundtable discussion, delegates examined how to best move forward with collaborative endeavors, ranging from shared equipment and other infrastructures to joint training initiatives. Particular emphasis was placed on practical methods for fostering and funding such ideas, and putting them into place in a complex multinational setting.
