Abstract
Quantum sensing is one of the major sectors of the emerging quantum technologies. These sensors have the proven advantage of reaching precisions that are beyond the capability of classical sensors. With implementations already in LIGO gravitation wave detectors, quantum sensing can be applied in a wide range of fields such as bio-medical imaging, radar technology, environmental monitoring, and dark matter search. The enhanced precision of these sensors originates from different quantum features.
This talk will focus on quantum phase transitions as an established resource for quantum enhancement. Along with an overview of the research area, several theoretical examples will be presented to showcase the quantum advantage. This will be followed by a discussion on ongoing quantum simulation experiments in collaboration with academic groups as well as in commercially available IBM quantum devices and D-Wave platform. The last part of the talk will touch upon the future directions that would address the practical issues of noise with tools from quantum error correction and machine learning.
About the Speaker
Dr. Saubhik Sarkar is a postdoctoral researcher in the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC). He obtained his PhD in the theory of quantum simulation with cold atoms in optical lattices from the University of Strathclyde, UK. His research mainly focuses on quantum simulation and quantum sensing. Other research topics include quantum error correction, tensor network methods, machine learning, and topological phases.
He has previously worked as postdoctoral researcher in HRI (India), IFPAN (Poland), and University of Calgary (Canada).
