The Energy, Environment and Water Research Center (EEWRC) is the first Research Center of the Cyprus Institute (CyI) that became operational in December 2007. In accordance with the charter of the Institute, the EEWRC is rapidly becoming an important research resource for Cyprus, the Eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East, and North Africa and as a gateway between the European Union and the region. The EEWRC addresses science, technology, economic and policy issues related to major challenges in the fields of energy, environment, climate and water for the Eastern Mediterranean. The CyI has partnered with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation (RPF).

Divisions

The scientific issues on EEWRC's research agenda relate to the basic mission of the Center and to its four divisions, namely:

  • Energy and renewable energy sources;
  • Environment and climate change;
  • Water and renewable natural resources;
  • Economy and policies.
Research

The research agenda of the Center revolves around the following themes:

  • Integrated (climate) impact assessments;
  • Environmental integrity and advanced environmental monitoring;
  • Solar power and technologies for the co-generation of electricity and desalinated seawater;
  • Research into the physical basis for improved solar cell efficiencies and fabrication technologies;
  • Energy- and water-use efficiency;
  • Environment and climate change;
  • Sustainable built-environment;
  • Holistic water management.
