Abstract

In the talk a data science pipeline will be presented that starts with geospatial data in various formats coming from heterogeneous sources (e.g., satellite images, administrative data) and ends with a complete user application.
The pipeline covers the whole lifecycle of such data including transforming into appropriate formats, interlinking with other data, integrating with other data sources, storing and querying efficiently, publishing on the Web and developing a visual application. Each stage of the pipeline is supported by tools that are based on semantic and linked data technologies.
The talk presents research results obtained by Prof. Manolis' group () in the last 13 years and which are summarized in the recent book "Geospatial Data Science: A Hands-on Approach for Building Geospatial Applications Using Linked Data Technologies" which was recently published in the series ACM Books (https://dl.acm.org/doi/book/10.1145/3581906 ).

About the Speaker

manolis koubarakisManolis Koubarakis is a Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Dept. of Informatics and Telecommunications, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He leads the Artificial Intelligence team. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the National Technical University of Athens, an M.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Toronto, and a diploma (B.Sc.) in Mathematics from the University of Crete. He is a Fellow of EurAI (European Association for Artificial Intelligence) since 2015, Member of the EurAI Board since 2022, and previous President of the Hellenic Association for Artificial Intelligence.

He is a member of the Advisory Board that implements the Hellenic National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence. He has published more than 200 papers that have been widely cited (8015 citations and h-index 47 in Google Scholar) in the areas of Artificial Intelligence (especially Knowledge Representation and Constraint Programming), Databases (especially temporal and spatial databases), Semantic Web, Knowledge Graphs and Linked Data (especially geospatial and Earth observation data), and Deep Learning for Natural Language Processing.

About the EuroCC-2 project

EuroCC 2 will work to identify and address the skills gaps in the European High Performance Computing (HPC) ecosystem and coordinate cooperation across Europe to ensure a consistent skills base.

The role of EuroCC 2 is to establish and run a network of more than 30 NCCs across the EuroHPC Participating States. The NCCs act as single points of access in each country between stakeholders and national and EuroHPC systems. They operate on a regional and national level to liaise with local communities, in particular SMEs, map HPC competencies and facilitate access to European HPC resources for users from the private and public sector.

EuroCC 2 delivers training, interacts with industry, develops competence mapping and communication materials and activities, and supports the adoption of HPC services in other related fields, such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence (AI), high performance data analytics (HPDA) to expand the HPC user base.

This project has received funding from the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (JU) under grant agreement No 101101903. The JU receives support from the European Union’s programme Digital Europe and Germany, Bulgaria, Austria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg , Slovakia, Norway, Switzerland, Turkey, the Republic of North Macedonia, Iceland, Montenegro and Serbia.
