Introducing the SimEA project Seminar Series

The SimEA Seminar Series aims at promoting and disseminating scientific knowledge, focusing on Computational Science and Engineering, by featuring prominent researchers from around the world presenting their views and addressing key questions.

The inaugural speaker is Prof. Vangelis Harmandaris, ERA-chair Professor of the Modelling and Simulation for Engineering Applications (SimEA) project of The Cyprus Institute, who will be presenting the SimEA ERA-Chair initiative and its main objectives and research topics and their impact on the fields of computational science and engineering of complex materials.

The Webinar will take place on Thursday, November 5th at 16:00 and will be live streamed via our YouTube and Facebook channels – see invitation below for more details. Please check The Cyprus Institute’s website for the calendar of events for upcoming webinar dates, times and topics.

Abstract

The ERA Chair project “Modeling and Simulation for Engineering Applications” (SimEA), funded by EU, refers to a new initiative at CaSToRC, of CyI, regarding the challenges and opportunities arising when advanced computing and data science are utilised to solve engineering problems. The research team, led by ERA Chair Prof. V. Harmandaris, will work on the development of mathematical and computational methodologies for complex molecular systems, with important applications in nano/bio technology.

The team will pursue a program of research excellence and innovation by applying and developing mathematical and computational methods, including multiscale modeling, physics-based and/or data-driven molecular models, uncertainty quantification, and machine learning methods, integrated with High-Performance Computing, for tackling challenging problems in different application areas related to Computational Science and Engineering.  Examples include a broad range of systems/materials of great scientific and technological interest, such as nanocomposites, polymers, graphene-based nanostructured materials, proteins, and biomolecular systems.

In this inaugural seminar, of seminar series under the SimEA, we will give an overview of the main objectives and research topics of the SimEA. Our vision is to create at CyI a regional and national hub for advanced computing and its applications, involving collaborating activities with academia and private sector, across several research areas, such as: (a) Multi-scale Modelling and Simulations of Nanostructured Materials, (b) Data-driven Machine Learning Approaches for Modelling Across Scales, (c) Modelling of Biomolecular Systems for Biotechnology Applications, (d) Statistical Inference for Uncertainty Quantification and Model Selection.

About the Speaker

Vangelis Harmandaris Prof. Vangelis Harmandaris is the ERA-chair holder of the Modelling and Simulations for Engineering Applications (SimEA) project of the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC) of The Cyprus Institute (CyI). His main expertise covers the areas of mathematical moVangelis Harmandarisdelling, computational modelling and engineering, soft condensed matter, thermodynamics and complex polymer-based materials. He received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Patras in 2002, with a dissertation on the “Atomistic Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Polymer Melt Viscoelasticity”.

Following a post-doctoral position at the Institute of Chemical Engineering and High-Temperature Chemical Processes and Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Patras, (Greece) and at the Theory Group at Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPIP) at Mainz (Germany) during 2005-2009, Vangelis Harmandaris obtained a Track Tenure Assistant Professorship position at the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Crete in Greece. On September of 2016 he became full Associate Professor at the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, leading a computational engineering group until July 2020, where he is currently the ERA-chair Professor of the SimEA project of CaSToRC of The Cyprus Institute.

Vangelis Harmandaris has published about 75 papers in refereed journals, 4 in books, 20 in refereed conference proceedings, and about 55 in non-refereed conference proceedings. He has given more than 120 (about 70 invited) presentations in international conferences and academic and industrial institutions. As of August 30, 2020, he has received (ISI, Web of Science) 3179 total citations (2833 non-self citations).  His h-index is 30. He has been a Reviewer for a large number of International Journals, for the European Union, and for various institutions among which the National Science Foundation (USA), the European Science Foundation, the Israeli Science Foundation (ISF), National Research Council of Romania, and the Greek General Secretariat for Research and Technology. He has also been the organizer and co-organizer of 10 International workshops and conferences.
