Atmospheric input is the major source of toxic organic chemicals, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), in the eastern Mediterranean open marine ecosystem. Dry and wet atmospheric deposition, air-sea exchange and sediment fluxes of PAHs and PCBs were studied. Air/sea exchange fluxes based on air-water concentration gradient are drawn from air and seawater samples from a coastal area in the eastern Mediterranean.

The results of these and previous studies are synthesized in order to construct a mass balance budget describing the status and dynamics of toxic organic chemicals in this region.
