Abstract
A sustainable built environment is a human-made space constituted of buildings, infrastructure, and systems that are designed, constructed and operated in order to minimize their environmental impact on the planet and maximize the quality of human life. Achieving a sustainable built environment is a wide, complex and ambitious challenge that requires multidisciplinary competencies, and field experience, as well as extensive computational skills.
In this last regard, building performance simulation, which is a computer-based and multi-disciplinary mathematical model of given aspects of building performance, is emerging as promising support for designers and consultants to address the complexity of the built environment. Unfortunately, although building performance simulation is renown to be a powerful, comprehensive, flexible and scalable tool, its use is not trivial, and modelers have to face several challenges for employing it to support the robust design and sustainable operation of buildings and energy systems.
About The Speaker
Salvatore Carlucci is Professor of Building Performance Simulation at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and Head of the Building Performance Simulation Laboratory. He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees with honors from the Technical University of Milan in Italy.
His research focuses on the indoor environmental quality (thermal, visual and acoustic comfort, and indoor air quality), sustainable, smart and low-energy buildings, occupant behavior and actions, and building performance simulation and optimization.
He has contributed to several European projects and to three Annexes approved by the International Energy Agency (IEA). Currently, he is one of the subtask leaders of the new IEA-EBC Annex 79 on Occupant-centric building design and operation.
Prof. Carlucci, together with his coauthors, received the 2018 Best Paper Award from the Building and Environment Journal and the (second) 2016 Best Paper Award from the Energies Journal.
This event is co-organised with the Embassy of Italy in Cyprus, in the context of Italian Research Day in the World, as part of a series of events organized by Italian Embassies in over 50 countries to highlight the significance of Italian research and researchers, the quality of the Italian educational system and the national technological know-how.
