Abstract
In recent years, impact of climate change and urban development have caused frequent periods of water scarcity and heavy floods. In dry periods problems of water shortage can be enhanced by conflictual uses of water such as irrigation, industrial and power production (hydroelectric and thermoelectric). Conversely, flood is the worst hazard among natural catastrophes, causing thousands losses of life and damages to property worldwide. The increased frequency of drought periods and heavy floods, have stimulated the improvement of water resources and flood risk management.
Dealing with extremes, both floods and droughts, an integrated system that couples meteorological forecast and hydrological modeling, is a valuable tool that can help reducing losses and damages.
Spatially distributed physically based hydrological models, with their ability to estimate energy and water fluxes, are invaluable tools for water resources management for agricultural water use and flood forecasting.
In this seminar, real time systems based on the coupling of the distributed hydrological model FEST-EWB and deterministic and probabilistic meteorological models, are presented. This work is partially supported by the SIM project (Smart irrigation from soil moisture forecast using satellite and hydro-meteorological modelling) funded by ERA-NET Waterworks 2014 cofunded call in the frame of the "Water challenges for a changing world” Joint Programming Initiative - WATER JPI
