Abstract
The study of the sequence of events that led to the formation of galaxies and the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) that usually reside at their centres constitutes one of the most important and challenging areas of research in modern Astrophysics. It is now clear that, in order to understand the numerous processes that govern galaxy formation and evolution (star formation by secular processes and in mergers, accretion onto SMBHs and feedback associated with them), we need multi-wavelength or panchromatic observations of galaxies at all cosmic epochs. This is mainly due to the presence of cosmic dust in the interstellar medium of galaxies, which significantly affects their ultraviolet to millimetre spectra.
Rich datasets that contain the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of large numbers of galaxies at all cosmic epochs have been accumulated from a number of space-born and ground based facilities. In this talk I will discuss how Bayesian inference and machine learning can be used to interpret the SEDs of galaxies and help make progress in the field of galaxy formation and evolution.
About the Speaker
Andreas Efstathiou was educated at Queen Mary, University of London. He held positions at Queen Mary & Westfield College (1989-1992), University of Hertfordshire (1992-1995) and Imperial College London (1995-2001) before joining Cyprus College which evolved into European University Cyprus (EUC).
He has published more than 130 papers (h-index 50) in refereed journals. His research interests lie in the area of infrared astronomy and cosmology, galaxy formation and evolution, star formation and active galactic nuclei. He has done pioneering work on radiative transfer modelling of the spectral energy distributions of galaxies and has developed models for the emission of almost every type of galaxy over their complete spectrum. His models have also been used for the interpretation of galaxies discovered in a number of extragalactic surveys (IRAS, ELAIS, FIRBACK, SWIRE, AKARI, SCUBA, SHADES, HerMES, Planck, WISE, ALMA).
He participated in extragalactic surveys with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO), the Spitzer Space Telescope and the submillimetre camera SCUBA. He is currently involved in the scientific exploitation of surveys with the Herschel Space Observatory and a survey that searches for highly extinguished supernovae and tidal disruption events in luminous infrared galaxies using adaptive optics on 10-meter class telescopes. He also continues his work on radiative transfer modelling of galaxies. He is currently Rector of European University Cyprus.
About the EuroCC-2 project
EuroCC 2 will work to identify and address the skills gaps in the European High Performance Computing (HPC) ecosystem and coordinate cooperation across Europe to ensure a consistent skills base.
The role of EuroCC 2 is to establish and run a network of more than 30 NCCs across the EuroHPC Participating States. The NCCs act as single points of access in each country between stakeholders and national and EuroHPC systems. They operate on a regional and national level to liaise with local communities, in particular SMEs, map HPC competencies and facilitate access to European HPC resources for users from the private and public sector.
EuroCC 2 delivers training, interacts with industry, develops competence mapping and communication materials and activities, and supports the adoption of HPC services in other related fields, such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence (AI), high performance data analytics (HPDA) to expand the HPC user base.
This project has received funding from the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (JU) under grant agreement No 101101903. The JU receives support from the European Union’s programme Digital Europe and Germany, Bulgaria, Austria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg , Slovakia, Norway, Switzerland, Turkey, the Republic of North Macedonia, Iceland, Montenegro and Serbia.
