Colloquium: The Transition Towards Zero Emission Vehicles - Technologies, Fuels and Impacts
Event Details:
- Date: Thursday, 12 January 2023
- Time: Starts: 16:00
- Venue: Fresnel Auditorium, The Cyprus Institute, Athalassa Campus, Aglantzia, Nicosia.
This is a hybrid event so you are also welcome to join us online on The Cyprus Institute YouTube channel and our our Facebook event page - Speaker: Prof. Zissis Samaras, Director of the Lab of Applied Thermodynamics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
Abstract
The talk will provide an overview of the European targets and regulatory interventions in the framework of the 'fit-for-55' (EU’s policy package for reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030), with a focus on the automotive sector. It will discuss the powertrain technologies of choice, new and alternative fuels and energies, as well as the new proposed Euro 7 emission regulation.
Special emphasis will be given to on-board monitoring, a powerful tool for controlling vehicle emissions and energy consumption. The contributions of our Thessaloniki group in the above activities will be particularly highlighted.
Speaker
Professor Zissis Samaras is Director of the Lab of Applied Thermodynamics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His research work deals with engine and vehicle emissions testing and modeling. He coordinated a number of large European projects, including “Characterisation of Particulate Emissions from Road Vehicles”, “Impact of ICT on road emissions”, “OBD systems and limits for Euro 6/VI”, “Measuring exhaust particles down to 10nm”.
He is elected Vice Chairman of the European Road Transport Research Advisory Council (ERTRAC). He provided expert advice to a number of organisations, including the World Bank, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), and the environmental organisation of the European Fuel Manufacturers Association (Concawe). He co-authored more than 270 publications, with more than 6200 citations (author h index 44) and holds four international patents.
He is the co-founder of three spin-off companies: Exothermia (exhaust aftertreatment simulation), Emisia (transport emission inventories) and Bio2CHP (biomass gasification). Currently he leads a consortium that advises the European Commission on Euro 7 related topics.
